The staple belief in most democrats circle of friends is the fact that we should pull our troops out of Iraq as soon as possible. They believe, and hope, that President elect Obama should put a timeline for withdraw on the United States military as soon as possible. Let's not get into the national security threat that this would pose to our country. Let's not talk about what a waste of time, money and life the Iraq war would become if we did so. Let's not talk about what a blow to the future of the world this would be. No, let's not talk about those things, because the conservatives and liberals will never agree on those points. We would be wasting our breath to talk about such things. Instead, let focus on what Senator Obama and some of the people that will be serving in his soon to be assembled cabinet have said about a timeline for withdraw. We'll start with President Elect Obama.
On June sixth, 2006, then Senator Obama was quoted as saying, "A hard, fast, arbitrary deadline for withdrawal offers our commanders in the field and our diplomats in the region insufficient flexibility to implement that strategy." I read that as saying, if we set a deadline for withdrawal, our commanders and diplomats in that region become powerless in fighting the war. We all want out of Iraq, but we all want to win the war first. By setting a deadline for withdrawal, we may be increasing the chances that we do not give them enough time to come out of the war victorious. For once, way back in 2006, I can honestly say I agreed with Barack Obama. I think I'll have a t-shirt made to commemorate the occasion.
Quite possibly our next Secretary of State, Senator Hillary Clinton was quoted on September 22, 2005 as saying, "I don't believe it's smart to set a date for withdrawal. I don't think you should ever telegraph your intentions to the enemy so they can await you." Absolutely brilliant Senator Clinton. These Democrats are really smart, aren't they?
Our current Vice President elect, Senator Joe Biden said on June 21, 2005 that "A deadline for pulling out will only encourage our enemies to wait us out. It would be a Lebanon 1985, and God only knows where it goes from there." You mean that if we set a deadline for withdrawal, our enemies would wait us out? They wouldn't just let us win the war so that we could be back home by the time our deadline was reached? Man, I thought the Islamic extremists were nicer than that!
Our current Senate Majority Leader, Harrry Reid was quoted on January 31, 2005, when he said that "As far as setting a timeline....that's not a wise decision, because it only empowers those who don't want us there." Come on Harry, are you sure? You're telling me that if we set a date for withdrawal, our enemies will feel a sense of winning the war? That's crazy! Surely Americans will think we have won the war if we pull all of the troops out of the region prematurely, wouldn't they?
So, there you have it. Real quotes from the soon to be Barack Obama administration. Real quotes that came out of these peoples mouths. You cannot argue them, debate them or even try to misinterpret them. They are real words and ideas. All you can do is remind them of these quotes when they try to set a deadline for withdrawal in Iraq! Wake up people and stop voting for artificial slogans such as "CHANGE." Vote on the issues and vote for what our politicians actually stand for.
